Westcott Flex Lights

PROS

When I first turned these on I was blown away with how bright my new Westcott Flex Lights were.

I love their versatility - to be able to velcro together or gaff tape two to a wall. These things are great.

I love these for interview or just adding fill to a room with natural light. We’ve cut out 1x1s of CTO gel as well as diffusion paper to soften the light for interviews. We just place them right in the softbox.

CONS

My biggest complaint with these lights is the mess you can make. Although they pack up reasonably small, it takes a lot of work to set them up.

First, you screw the x frame together.
Next is attaching the light, softbox, and any filters.
Finally, either attach the 4 segments of cord or untangle the giant mess if you’ve left them together.

This happens often and it’ll take you a while to fix.

The dimmer is also VERY large... too large. I think the power and dimmer could have been streamlined better.

We own four 1x1s for the versatility and spread them out, but I often wish we had the 1x2 or 2x2 for convenience.

CONCLUSION

Although others can be way more convenient, I’ve loved having flex lights over using the ice light for interviews. At the end of the day I do love these lights. Great output. Durable. Water resistant. Portable. I bring at least at least two to all our shoots.

Hopefully they’ll make the design more convenient on the next one, or maybe i’ll look into one of the larger lights so I don’t have to deal with so many cords. Definitely would recommend picking up one of these to try out for yourself.
