Underwater Housing for Sony RX100-Series Cameras
I’ve always wanted to capture underwater footage with more than an action camera. When I saw that Sony had an underwater housing for my RX100V for around $300... I decided to give it a shot. I had a promo for a private school coming up and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to add something different.
The nice thing about the RX100 over an action camera is the fixed 24-70 2.8 Zeiss lens, slow motion, and manual controls. It's very dark underwater. I do wish it had a larger sensor for light, but it's a great improvement over an action camera at an affordable price.
Thanks to the fixed lens there isn’t much to setup or adjust. The housing allows you to adjust every function on the camera, from setting exposure, focusing and turning the camera on and off. The housing is so robust, I’ve also use the housing above ground as extra protection when mounting my RX100V to my car.
For this shoot, I used a strong fresnel shining into the water to highlight the swimmer. Two things I took away from the shoot would be to get a stronger light source and getting a large tripod and weights to anchor the camera into place even at 6” deep.
Most underwater housings that maintain all camera functions are four figures. Overall, I'm pleased to have this as an option for a minimal investment.
